The government of Cyprus approved the rollout of a digital identification system on Tuesday while Ethiopia ramps up enrolling its people into a digital ID system via the launching of an ‘enrollment campaign’ on Thursday.

“The Cypriot government has approved the issuance of 100,000 digital IDs, with 30,000 of them to be given free of charge to those who go for them first. The remaining 70,000 digital IDs will be issued at a government-subsidized rate of €15 (US$16),” Biometric Update said Thursday. “…the digital ID will be used for several purposes including identity verification, authentication and digital document signing, among others. It will ensure easy and safe access to services offered by the government and private entities.”

While enrollment into the digital ID will begin ‘soon’ in Cyprus, Ethiopia has already began the enrollment phase of their system. It is now gearing up with an ‘enrollment drive’ in the nation’s capital.

“A month-long digital ID enrollment campaign gets underway in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa,” Biometric Update said Thursday. “The enrollment drive is part of a partnership which the Addis Ababa Civil Registration and Residence Services Agency entered into with the Ethiopia National ID Program (NIDP)”

In order for those in Cyprus to get their digital ID, they must already have a Cyprus biometric national ID card. Biometrics are also being collected for the Ethiopian digital ID.
