A Democrat lawmaker and ordained minister was caught swiping and hiding Bibles in a private lounge at the Arizona State Capitol, according to reports.

Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton was seen on camera removing Bibles from their usual resting places and stashing them out of view after multiple similar incidents unfolded in a members-only space at the Capitol complex in Phoenix.

On March 23, the Arizona House of Representatives was notified that a pair of Bibles normally available in the lounge were missing.

The Holy Books were later found under chair cushions.

After another Bible disappeared days later and turned up in a refrigerator, security officers set up a camera to monitor the room.

On April 10, Bibles were taken again, but this time, the culprit was caught in the act.

Stahl Hamilton can be seen grabbing a Bible off a table and hurriedly tossing it under a sofa.

When Stahl Hamilton was confronted by AZ Family reporter David Caltabiano, she fled.

“Just a little playful commentary on the separation of church and state. I am a Presbyterian minister so I obviously don’t have a problem with the Bible,” she later claimed in a statement to AZ Family.

In 2020, Stahl Hamilton posted a photo on Twitter of President Donald J. Trump holding up a Bible in front of St. John’s Church.

“I’m an ordained minister. I got into politics because I was so angered by the number of Bibles on desks at the Arizona State House,” she wrote.

“Holding a Bible – or any religious text – doesn’t make you a good person. Nor should you use this a political photo op. This is disgusting.”

Pro Tempore Speaker Travis Grantham, a Republican, expressed his shock at Stahl Hamilton’s conduct.

“When I’m watching that, I’m thinking, ‘Well, this is obviously someone who’s got some purpose and some intent, and they know they’re doing something bad,’” Grantham told AZ Family.

“For an ordained minister to do that, again, it’s nonsensical. I have no clarity as to why it happened.”

“Tampering with House property is a serious offense,” the Arizona Freedom Caucus tweeted on Wednesday.

It is unclear if Stahl Hamilton will face any repercussions at this time.
