The Department of Justice, with special counsel Robert Mueller, investigated whether Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was bankrolled by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The investigation, previously undisclosed, was revealed by The Washington Post last week. It sought to discover whether a $10 million donation to the Trump campaign by Donald Trump himself was actually paid for by the Egyptian government.

The investigation began in 2017 when classified US intelligence suggested that Sisi provided funding for the Trump campaign. The investigation, led by the DoJ, involved special counsel Robert Mueller, and at one point included a legal battle with the National Bank of Egypt, after investigators were told of a significant cash withdrawal from the National Bank of Egypt days before Trump’s inauguration.

The legal battle with the National Bank of Egypt reached the US Supreme Court, which ruled against the Bank and ordered that the Bank surrender records to the investigation. After initially holding out, the Bank relented, and delivered 1,000 pages of documents to the investigation.

The DoJ’s investigators could not determine the source of the funds, and the case was eventually closed by US Attorney Michael Sherwin.

Sherwin told The Post that the Biden administration, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, who took over the Department of Justice, could have relaunched the probe if they disagreed.

“The case was closed without prejudice,” Sherwin said. “Anyone could have reopened the case the second I left that office.”

“The investigation referenced found no wrongdoing and was closed,” a spokesman for the Trump campaign also told The Washington Post.

“None of the allegations or insinuations being reported on have any basis in fact. The Washington Post is consistently played for suckers by Deep State Trump-haters and bad faith actors peddling hoaxes and shams.”
