Former CIA Director John Brennan appeared on MSNBC Saturday to express his “concerns” over the new leadership in the FBI and Justice Department under the new Trump presidency.
During a segment on “The Weekend,” Brennan first criticized Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), claiming the watchdog group, which has access to internal agency systems, could be exploited by America’s adversaries.
“What I’m concerned is, right now with all of these individuals that [Elon] Musk and DOGE have sent into are government institutions and having access to those systems and networks and databases,” Brennan said. “This is something that is ripe for exploitation by the Russians and the Chinese in terms of intelligence.”

“These are individuals who haven’t been vetted, they don’t have the security clearances or background, and so they’re now accessing all this information that involves U.S. citizens, sensitive U.S. databases and other things,” he added.
Brennan then lamented over the confirmations of FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, claiming that he’s been named in an “enemies list” compiled by Patel.
“I’m very concerned about the politicization of the leadership of the bureau, Kash Patel. I’m on Kash Patel’s enemy list in his book,” Brennan said, referring to Patel’s 2023 book Government Gangsters.
“And so, between Kash Patel and Pam Bondi and others, is the bureau, is the Department of Justice going to uphold its tradition of making sure that they carry out their responsibilities with integrity and in an apolitical fashion?” Brennan asked.
“And I think there are serious questions, including among the people within the DOJ and FBI right now, about whether or not their leadership is going to bring them down this very dark place where it’s unprecedented in American history,” he added.
Patel in Appendix B of his book furnished a list he dubbed, “Members of the Executive Branch Deep State,” which includes Brennan.

Other names include former FBI and DOJ officials, such as former Attorneys General Merrick Garland, Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch, as well as former FBI Director Christopher Wray, disgraced former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and Bill Priestap, the former Assistant Director for the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division.
Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, her former campaign chairman John Podesta, and former Vice President Kamala Harris are also named, but Patel said the list is by no means “exhaustive.”
Brennan’s concerns about the “politicization” of the DOJ and FBI are rich given he was one of 51 former intelligence officials to sign a letter falsely claiming Hunter Biden’s infamous “Laptop from Hell” was Russian disinformation, in an effort quarterbacked by the Biden campaign to help Joe Biden win the 2020 election.
President Trump revoked the security clearances from all the 51 former intel officials within the first week of his new administration.
