Flashback footage from 2001 shows then-NYC real estate mogul Donald Trump giving multiple interviews regarding the WTC building collapses, with one interesting moment depicting Trump declaring he believed bombs may have played a role in the destruction.
In an archived video unearthed from Sept. 11, 2001, Trump – who has considerable experience in architecture, construction and building materials – called in to a live news report and suggested bombs may have been rigged to explode due to the ease with which the planes penetrated the 110-story tall steel structures.
“How could it (a plane) possibly go through the steel?” the professional skyscraper builder questioned, adding, “I happen to think they had not only a plane, but they had bombs that exploded almost simultaneously.”
Trump additionally noted how the WTC structures built solid with heavy steel lining the outside of the buildings would likely have been able to withstand substantial impact, however the planes somehow left holes in the buildings’ steel frames.
Other footage in the days following the disaster showed Trump telling reporters he sent 100 men from his company to aid the response efforts, and also that he personally visited the Ground Zero site to survey the damage.
In May 2005, Trump called a press conference to unveil his proposal for Twin Towers II, which would have incorporated salvaged exterior panels from the original towers.
The archived footage, along with his steadfast commitment to recreating the site in the likeness of the former buildings, illustrates how the 9/11 terror attacks have held significant importance for the current GOP presidential frontrunner.
