Ex-ABC News journalist James Gordon Meek, 52, was arrested Tuesday night by federal agents on charges of transporting images of child sex abuse.

The DOJ detailed its arrest of the Emmy Award-winning national security investigative producer in a press release Wednesday, saying the FBI Washington Field Office’s Child Exploitation division initially investigated Meek after an anonymous tip sent via Dropbox.

“That lead ultimately led to a court-authorized search of Meek’s residence in April 2022 by members of the task force, where law enforcement seized multiple devices that allegedly contained evidence of the transportation of images of child sexual abuse,” the DOJ stated.

From the press release:

“According to court documents, several of Meek’s devices allegedly contained images depicting children engaged in sexually explicit conduct, and multiple chat conversations with users engaged in sexually explicit conversations where the participants expressed enthusiasm for the sexual abuse of children. In two of those conversations, a username allegedly associated with Meek received and distributed child sexual abuse materials through an internet-based messaging platform.”

The raid of Meek’s residence by the FBI made headlines last October, with many speculating the journalist may have illegally possessed classified documents that may have compromised national security.

Citing a Rolling Stone article breaking the news, the New York Post reported in August Meek had not been seen since the raid:

[Rolling Stone] magazine cited “sources familiar with the matter” as saying that federal agents found classified information on Meek’s laptop computer.

It is unclear which news story prompted the federal government to set its sights on Meek, whose groundbreaking reporting on the 2017 Pentagon coverup of the deaths of US servicemen in Niger served as the basis for the Hulu documentary.

Meek’s reporting was featured in a documentary available on Hulu titled, “3212 UN-REDACTED An Ambush In Africa. The Pentagon’s Betrayal.”

Meek faces five to 20 years in prison if convicted.
