An 82-year-old woman suffered serious injuries during a brutal robbery by African migrants in France last week, according to reports.
The disturbing incident unfolded in the city of Nice on July 11 but details of the case have just been made public.
The victim was reportedly walking downtown near Place Garibaldi, an area that attracts both tourists and criminals, when she was ambushed by two men intent on stealing her jewelry, Le Figaro reports.
During the attack, the elderly woman was knocked to the ground, where she struck her head.
The suspects ripped off her gold necklaces and fled the scene, leaving the unconscious victim lying on scorching hot cobblestones.
Witnesses immediately alerted emergency services and the victim was rushed to hospital where she was treated for serious head injuries as well as other wounds.
Authorities arrested two homeless men, aged 21 and 36, at Place Garibaldi a short time later.
They were in possession of the stolen jewelry at the time of their apprehension, authorities say.
They were both identified as citizens of Senegal but their immigration statuses are unclear.
The older suspect reportedly has an extensive criminal history that includes six prior convictions.
According to the latest available updates, the victim still was hospitalized more than a week after the robbery.
An investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
