A gay bar in Minneapolis is jumping on the boycott bandwagon and banning Bud Light and its parent company’s products after the beer brand admitted to making a mistake by hiring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
More from The Star Tribune:
Longstanding downtown Minneapolis gay bar The Saloon will no longer sell Bud Light or other Anheuser-Busch beverages because of how the beer brand handled backlash from a marketing campaign involving a transgender influencer.
With the Twin Cities Pride festival set for this weekend, the Hennepin Avenue bar announced Monday it cut ties with the St. Louis-based brewing giant and replaced its products with beer from local breweries.
Bar owner John Moore said he banned the beer just days ahead of the city’s Pride festival because Anheuser Busch caved so easily to anti-LGBTQ pressure.
“I’m so protective of doing business with people who have integrity and don’t get into an anti-queer agenda,” he said, saying he got rid of beers like Bud Light, Michelob Golden Light and Michelob Ultra, and replaced them with beers from local breweries.
“We’ve gotten so much support from the community for changing to local beers and addressing what Anheuser-Busch had done,” he said.
The bar’s move follows comments from country music legend Garth Brooks who said his new Nashville bar Friends In Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk would “serve every brand of beer,” and proceeded to refer to people who disagree as “a-holes.”
The bar’s decision also comes as Global Chief Marketing Officer of Anheuser-Busch, Marcel Marcondes, on Monday called the doomed partnership with Mulvaney a “wake-up call” to marketers.
“Bud Light is coming back. It’s going all around the country, reconnecting with consumers, moving forward. That’s what you can expect from Bud Light in the U.S,” Marcondes told Ad Age.
Meanwhile, Modelo Especial – another company owned by Anheuser Busch parent company InBev (outside of the US), has managed to overtake Bud Light in sales to become America’s top beer.
It remains to be seen if Bud Light will ever manage to reclaim the beer drinkers it alienated on both sides of the gay indoctrination issue, and whether it can restore its former prominent status.
