Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) slammed United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra during a hearing on Tuesday.
The GOP congressman questioned the HHS head about the government’s poor handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a video going viral online, Kiley asked Becerra, “Did forcing 2-year-olds to wear masks save lives?”
The Biden administration official stammered, saying, “Making sure people were masked when it was appropriate was essential to make sure we were able to get out of this pandemic.”
Kiley explained the secretary’s response did not answer his question and pressed Becerra again.
The smug HHS secretary asked, “Who did the forcing?”
The California GOP politicians explained the Head Start program under HHS had a mask mandate up until late 2022 requiring individuals two years old and above to wear masks, even when outdoors.
“Can you point to any health benefit of that policy?” Kiley asked.
Becerra said his agency never “forced” anyone to wear a mask because they “don’t have the jurisdiction or authority to do that.”
When Kiley forced the HHS head to answer whether or not Head Start had a mask mandate, Becerra specified the mask mandate only applied to agencies that wanted funding from HHS.
Kiley again asked if there was any public health benefit to the policy and Becerra danced around the question, failing to properly answer.
Next, the California GOP congressman pointed out the World Health Organization doesn’t even recommend putting face masks on children under age five and questioned why America didn’t follow the group’s lead.
Becerra again provided a dishonest political response and frustratingly refused to properly answer the congressman’s question.
This spat perfectly highlights how the dishonest Biden administration officials constantly skirt accountability when being questioned by America’s elected officials.
