Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) took Joe Biden’s side over fellow Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (Fla.) on the issue of mask mandates.
In a CNN interview on Sunday, Cassidy condemned DeSantis’ ban of mask and vaccine mandates when asked if he agreed with DeSantis’ policy.
“Some governors, like Ron DeSantis in Florida, Greg Abbott in Texas, they’re blocking imposing restrictions like mask mandates,” CNN’s Dana Bash said. “The virus is surging in those states, as in yours. You are a doctor. You are an official. shouldn’t local officials be allowed to make mask mandates?”
Cassidy agreed, claiming unelected health experts should determine the level of freedom Americans have.

“I’m a conservative. You govern best when you govern closest to the people being governed. If a local community is having — their ICU is full, and people at the local schools see they’ve got to make sure they stay open because otherwise children will miss out for another year of school and they put in policies, then the local official should be listened to. That is a conservative principle,” Cassidy said.
“I do disagree with Governor DeSantis,” he continued. “Local officials should have control here. I don’t want top-down from Washington, DC. I don’t want top-down from a governor’s office. Sometimes in cases of national defense, things like that, but if my hospitals are full, vaccination rate is low, and infection rate is going crazy, local officials should be allowed to make those decisions.”
The Louisiana senator then advocated for the experimental mRNA injection rather than making the case for natural immunity.
“If we don’t want this, we have it within our control, all we need to do is to get vaccinated,” Cassidy said.

“If you have a large percentage of your population which is not vaccinated and your infection rate is going up you got one of two choices: if you’re inside, either you’re vaccinated or you have to wear a mask,” he added.
This comes after Biden railed against DeSantis for banning mask mandates last week, telling him to “get out of the way of the people that are trying to do the right thing.”
For a physician, Cassidy doesn’t seem to interpret data very well, or understand the important concept of natural immunity.
Although COVID cases have spiked in Florida, the death rate remains extremely low.
