Group Calls On Austin to Cancel ACL Fest “Super Spreader Event”

Lucrative two-week festival already sold out.

Comes as Austin City Council imposed Stage 5 Covid restrictions, which advise against high-risk outdoor gatherings with people outside of household.

A health-conscious group is asking the City of Austin to put its money where its mouth is and cancel the lucrative Austin City Limits festival in response to the dreaded Delta variant.

The festival typically draws hundreds of thousands of people and tourists from across the country, in addition to flooding the city with over $264 million in revenue.

However, the group “Cancel ACL Fest” has launched a petition at Change.org asking city leaders to postpone the upcoming event, which they label a “super spreader event.”

“Due to Governor Abbott’s laws against vaccine passports and mask mandates, it is no longer safe to have this event,” the group writes, adding that “ACL has no plans to even discuss canceling.”

“For the public safety of all that live in Austin, it’s best to cancel the festival. The pandemic is not over yet, the virus is still mutating. We must do all that we can to stop this super spreader event.”

“Many people without vaccines will be able to attend, many people will become ill. We must ACT NOW!” the petition adds.

As of writing the petition has received over 1,200 signatures.

However, despite Austin city leaders last week again imposing Stage-5 risk-based guidelines, which recommend against high-risk outdoor gatherings with people outside of your household, the festival’s cancellation has not yet been discussed.

“For Stage 5, High-risk vaccinated people as well as for partially vaccinated and unvaccinated people, private indoor gatherings are not recommended at all, with or without masks,” the city advised last week.

The sold-out two-week festival, featuring 8 stages and over 130 bands headlined by Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and George Strait, is set to take place in Zilker Park on Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 8-10.

On Tuesday, former Fleetwood Mac vocalist Stevie Nicks announced she would be pulling out of ACL Fest as well as all other concerts this year due to “rising COVID cases.”
