The son of Ryan Routh has spoken out to defend his father, claiming he’s “not a violent person” but he does “hate” Donald Trump.
Oran Routh spoke to the Daily Mail in the aftermath of his father’s abortive attempt on the former president’s life at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach.
He said that his father hates Trump like “every reasonable person does,” and expressed his own personal dislike of the former president.
He added that his father isn’t “a violent person,” and, as far as he knew, didn’t even own a gun.
“He’s my dad and all he’s had is couple traffic tickets, as far as I know,” the son said.
“That’s crazy. I know my dad and love my dad, but that’s nothing like him.”
He said his father was working as a general contractor building homes in Hawaii, and that he had travelled to Ukraine in 2022 to volunteer and provide aid. He also said he had no idea his father was in Florida at the time of the attempt on Donald Trump’s life.
“He said he was at the beach, but I thought that meant the outer banks in Hawaii,” Oran said.
“I didn’t ask him for more information because we’ve had a falling out. We’ve grown apart.”
He provided no details of the circumstances or nature of the “falling out.”
Later, after his initial phone call, Oran Routh sent a series of text messages to the Mail in which he appeared to justify his father’s actions.
“I hate this game every four years, and think that we all do, and if my father wants to be a martyr to how broken and disassociated the process has become from the real problems and practical solutions, then that’s his choice.
“I’m not saying that’s what he’s done or what he’s about, that’s just my own rant being fed up with it all for my entire adult life.
“South Park said it best, every 4 years we’re forced to choose between a turd sandwich and a giant douche, and it all stays f****d in the same ways by different degrees, and we’re exhausted and embarrassed by it all.”
Donald Trump was playing golf at his West Palm Beach golf course on Sunday afternoon when a Secret Service agent engaged a man wielding an AK-47. The man, Ryan Routh, had positioned himself a hole ahead of the former president, at a distance of between 300 and 500 yards, and was pointing his weapon through the fence. Routh fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving his weapon, two bags and a GoPro camera, but was later apprehended on I-95 in Martin County.
Details about the would-be assassin, including his links to the Ukrainian war effort, continue to emerge. Although his social-media accounts have already been scrubbed, Twitter users have been posting screengrabs from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram that show how Routh was involved with recruiting on behalf of Kyiv, in Europe and in the US. He posted angry anti-Trump and pro-Ukraine messages.
Records suggest he made 19 donations to Democratic candidates since 2019.
He also appears to have been well known to law enforcement, with a string of offences to his name, including “possession of a weapon of mass destruction” in 2002.
