Within hours of announcing on Saturday that they’d reached a ceasefire agreement with the help of President Donald Trump, India and Pakistan could soon be back at each other’s necks after India vowed to respond to apparent attacks by Pakistan later in the day.
Blasts were reported in Indian Kashmir and flashes were seen in the night sky, according to authorities.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later confirmed the reports by accusing Pakistan of violating the ceasefire, calling on Pakistan to to stop the attacks to avoid further escalation and vowing his nation would soon be “giving an adequate and appropriate response.”
Indian Army Col. Sofiya Qureshi said, “Indian armed forces remain in a high state of operational readiness. All hostile actions have been effectively countered and responded appropriately. Indian armed forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is reciprocated by the Pakistan military.”
President Trump had taken a victory lap following the ceasefire announcement, writing on Saturday morning, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Time will tell whether or not the peace deal can be upheld despite the ongoing tension.
