Legend has it that George arrived upon a village where a dragon was terrorizing the local people. To appease the creature, they had begun to sacrifice a sheep per day to feed its hunger until they no longer had any sheep. The King then decreed that they must sacrifice the local children to keep the dragon at bay.
Each day, the sacrifice was chosen by lottery until the King’s daughter was selected. As she was being led to the dragon, George happened by. Horrified by what he discovered, he offered to slay the dragon. During his battle with the dragon, George noticed a vulnerable patch of skin under its arm and charged forward with his sword, slaying the beast.

On the obverse of each 1 oz 1776 Founding Member Silver Round, you will see a rendition of George Washington slaying the dragon and the Latin inscription “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS! Sic semper tyrannis literally translates as “thus always to tyrants.” A tyrant, by definition, is a ruler who arbitrarily and unjustly wields power to oppress the citizenry, depicted by the dragon. The idea is that a tyrant will surely meet a dire end, which is expected and just. The image is a front-facing George Washington in colonial attire mounted on a horse, slaying the dragon of tyranny. George Washington was an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Our rendition of George Washington slaying the dragon represents victory over tyranny!
On the reverse of each 1 oz 1776 Founding Member Silver Round, you will see a rendition of an American eagle, with the inscription 1776 above its head, and a globe at its feet, as well as the Latin inscription “SIC RESISTENTIAM!” Sic Resistentiam literally translates as “so there is resistance.” The inscription 1776 represents the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War was an insurrection by American Patriots in the 13 colonies to British rule, resulting in American independence. The American eagle represents freedom! The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America. The globe represents the world, with North America centered, representing our strategic value and symbol of freedom to the entire world.
