Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration ordered the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to launch several missile strikes on Gaza late Monday night after Hamas refused to release hostages.
The IDF attack was intended to secure “the release of all our hostages — living and dead,” with Netanyahu saying his nation would continue attacking Hamas “with increasing military force.”
The Israeli government also claimed it had proof Hamas was preparing to “execute terror attacks, build up force and re-arm.”
The White House confirmed President Donald Trump was consulted by Israel ahead of the bombings.
Prior to the assault, Hamas and Israel were planning to hold negotiations in February discussing the release of the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for the IDF withdrawing from Gaza and agreeing to a permanent ceasefire.
While the Gaza strikes signal an escalation in the Middle East, President Trump is speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin Tuesday morning to try and reach a peace deal between the Kremlin and Ukraine.
