A Massachusetts man was arrested for allegedly trying to stab a flight attendant in the neck after threatening to kill fellow passengers during a flight out of Los Angeles on Monday, according to the Justice Department.
Video of the incident taken by a passenger shows 33-year-old Francisco Severo Torres allegedly threatening to take over the aircraft while brandishing a sharp object.
“I will kill every man on this plane!” Torres shouted. “Where’s Homeland Security?! Where are they diverting us? Wherever they are taking us, it’s going to be a bloodbath!”
“I’m taking over this plane!” he shouted as he held up a weapon.
Torres had allegedly tried to open a door in the plane about 45 minutes before landing.

During a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston, the flight crew saw an alarm that a door in the plane had been disarmed and, after inspection, a flight attendant saw the door’s locking handle had been pushed out of the fully locked position and an emergency slide arming lever had been disarmed, according to the Justice Department.
A flight attendant who saw Torres near the door went to talk to Torres about the door, according to the department, who asked if there were cameras showing he had tampered with the door.
According to a statement by the DOJ, Torres then stabbed the flight attendant three times in the neck with a broken metal spoon, prompting male passengers to tackle and restrain him.
According to court documents, the flight attendant then notified the captain that they believed Torres posed a threat to the aircraft and that the captain needed to land the aircraft as soon as possible.
Shortly thereafter, it is alleged that Torres got out of his seat and approached the starboard side door where two flight attendants were standing in the aisle. One of the flight attendants saw Torres mouthing something that he could not hear. Torres then allegedly thrust towards one of the flight attendants in a stabbing motion with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant on the neck area three times. Passengers then tackled Torres and he was restrained with the assistance of flight crew. Torres was immediately taken into custody upon the flight’s arrival to Boston.
Audio transcripts of the crew’s communication with air traffic control showed they had declared a flight emergency.
ATC: United 2609 what happened on board and is the person detained?
Crew: Person is detained attempted opening of external door, emergency door. That person was subdued and is being detained however not going quietly he’s just laying there with 6 able bodies on top of him.
ATC: Roger.
Torres was charged with one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.
United thanked the crew and passengers who subdued Torres in a statement:
“Thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one customer was restrained after becoming a security concern on United flight 2609 from Los Angeles to Boston,” United said.
“We have zero tolerance for any type of violence on our flights, and this customer will be banned from flying on United pending an investigation. We are cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.”
Torres will remain detained pending a hearing on Thursday.
