Former Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake laid into Democrat Ariz. Sen. Mark Kelly’s proposal to censor social media in order to prevent bank runs.
On Monday Lake took the former astronaut and Phil Collins-lookalike to the woodshed, calling him out for immediately wanting to squelch the American people’s rights.
“Let me get this straight,” Lake tweeted. “The globalist elites in the banking industry dove head first off the fiscal cliff & @SenMarkKelly’s solution was to censor people from talking about it?”
“Why is the Democrat answer to everything always stripping away our rights?” the GOP firebrand asked.
Kelly reportedly proposed the idea during a meeting Sunday with members of the FDIC, the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department and other congressmen.
Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger first reported on Kelly’s censorship comments, saying he’d asked the financial institutions “if they had a way to censor information on social media to prevent a run on the banks, according to Republican members of the House of Representatives who were on the call.”
Shellenberger added his report was corroborated by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who explained, “I believe [Kelly] couched it in a concern that foreign actors would be doing this… but he didn’t suggest the censorship should be limited to foreigners or to things that were untrue. The people from the three agencies couldn’t answer him and just sort of took a pass on the question.”
Massie tweeted about the remarks Sunday, but did not name the “Democrat senator” in question.
The emergency meeting came in the wake of last week’s collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, a development that has threatened to upend the entire banking industry.
