Photos have emerged showing US Olympic star Gwen Berry wrapping herself in the American flag to request donations, throwing her recent anti-flag stunt into question.
The 32-year-old olympic hammer thrower from Missouri made headlines Saturday for turning her back on the American flag while the national anthem played, as she stood on the third place platform at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials.
“She turned, placed her hand on her hip, and near the end of the ‘Star-Spangled Banner,’ held up a T-shirt reading “Activist Athlete” and draped it over her head,” described NPR.
Archived photos obtained through Google Images, however, show Berry didn’t always have a contentious relationship with the flag.
In one photo, used for a donation page at MakeAChamp.com, Berry is seen proudly waving the American flag as she reveals a wide smile.

The photos have since either been deleted, or are otherwise no longer visible on her page, which is still up; however, the photo was there long enough for Google Image’s archive system to have catalogued it.
Berry appears to have received about $260 in contributions from the page which appears to have initially been posted 7 years ago.
In another photo archived by Google for a 2020 event hosted by AirBnB, Berry poses with an olympic hammer in front of a large US flag.

Fast-forward to 2021 and the female olympian argues the flag she represents and the national anthem are racist and disrespectful towards black people.
“If you know your history, you know the full song of the National Anthem, the third paragraph speaks to slaves in America, our blood being slain…all over the floor,” Berry told Black News Channel on Monday. “It’s disrespectful and it does not speak for black Americans. It’s obvious. There’s no question.”
As a result of the photos, which show Berry embracing the flag just years ago, many on social media are claiming she only shows affinity towards the flag when it might benefit her financially.
“It’s all a grift. Will wrap herself in the flag to get donations,” one OP noted in a popular post at pro-Trump forum Patriots.win.
