A Florida man who won a women’s no-limits Texas Hold’em poker tournament is being accused of exploiting loopholes in the state’s anti-discrimination laws.
On Saturday, bearded Delton resident David Hughes, 70, paid the $250 to enter the World Series of Poker’s Ladies event inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., and went on to defeat 82 biological women, walking out with sweet victory and a cool $5,555.
The New York Post explains, “Per its anti-discrimination legislation, Florida casinos by law cannot ban men from entering into a women’s tournament.” A similar rule exists in Las Vegas.
Hughes’ participation in the tourney immediately ruffled feathers in the female poker community, so much so that professional female poker player Ebony Kenney issued a bounty for him which climbed to over $2,000 – it was never claimed, however.
Following the tournament, Hughes’ final heads-up opponent, Dayanna Ciabaton, shared a statement from women’s poker organization Pocket Queens which bizarrely issued comments defending “trans women.”
“[I]t is almost impossible to ignore the rhetoric and transphobia surrounding the discussion of men playing in women-only events,” wrote the group which claims to value women in the poker community.
“We want to be clear on where we stand. Trans women are women and they are welcome to join Pocket Queens to study and learn with us. We will not tolerate any kind of discrimination or engage in any discourse arguing otherwise.”
Professional UK poker player Charlie Carrel remarked Hughes was “[poking] fun at the idea that anybody can identify as a woman and be allowed to enter women’s spaces.”
“It’s a real issue that people are taking advantage of in many different areas, including sports, prisons, and changing areas,” Carrel said. “This has lead to some horrific repercussions (female inmates being raped in prison, or women getting destroyed in MMA fights by somebody who spent 95% of their life as a man).”
Despite Hughes’ victory, Carrel claimed, “The difference between male and female players is negligible enough that the incentive for men to join women’s spaces isn’t really there.”
The Daily Mail noted a man previously entered a women’s poker tournament in 2009, won, and received similar derision.
Former World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion Abraham Korotki entered a $300 buy-in competition at the Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City in 2009.
Participants in the poker tournament were said to have been furious with Korotki at the time, growing increasingly irate with him as he advanced through each round.
Korotki was one of two people who remained standing at the end, facing competitor Nicole Rowe from New York. But the man took home the prize pot of $20,982 after defeating the women challengers.
It remains to be seen if the controversy surrounding Hughes’ victory in the women’s poker tournament will lead to any changes in anti-discrimination laws.
