After weeks of criticism the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor wearing a hard hat and an orange vest showed up in the Ohio town affected by fallout from a massive chemical spill.
Buttigieg did not appear eager to take questions, as he ignored reporters who attempted to ask him why he took so long to show up.
The Transportation Secretary’s spokesperson agreed to take questions, but then later said she didn’t want to be on camera and called reporters “aggressive.”
After initially ignoring her, Buttigieg did eventually speak with Turning Point USA reporter Savanah Hernandez.
Buttigieg also gave comments to another Turning Point USA reporter.
“This morning I’m in East Palestine, Ohio, to see the site of the Norfolk Southern derailment, hear updates from investigators, and meet first responders,” Buttigieg tweeted. “USDOT will continue its work to ensure safety and accountability.”
Buttigieg toured the wreckage with members of the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Transportation Secretary also held a press conference using the disaster site as a backdrop.
Amid the presser, he accused Republicans of spreading “misinformation” about the disaster.
After weeks of being absent, he also claimed: “That’s why we’ve been here from the first hours of the incident as an administration.”
And just as soon as he arrived, he quickly departed.
Buttigieg’s pitiful response to the crisis was contrasted a day earlier by President Donald Trump’s visit to the town where he was hailed as a hero as he brought water, food and supplies for the afflicted residents.
