A sitting Texas Congresswoman who has missed voting in Washington for six months has been found living in a nursing-home facility.
Kay Granger, 81, who is currently the GOP’s longest-serving representative, hasn’t visited her office in Washington for the last six months, and her last recorded vote was in July.
Until 2024, Granger was the Republican chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee.
A reporter from the Dallas Express decided to track her down, and after a tip-off from a constituent, discovered her living in a $4,000-a-month nursing home that specializes in memory loss.
Granger had been moved to the home after being “found wandering, lost and confused” in her local district.
The response to the revelation has been greeted with anger.
“The lack of representation for CD-12 is troubling to say the least,” said Tarrant County GOP Chair Bo French.
“At a time when extraordinarily important votes are happening, including debt ceiling, disaster relief, farm bills and border issues, Kay Granger is nowhere to be found.
“The margin in Congress is razor thin and the lack of a Republican vote representing CD-12 disenfranchises 2 million people. We deserve better.”
Another local Republican described Granger’s fate as “a sad and humiliating way to end her political career,” adding that it was “Sad that nobody cared enough to ‘take away the keys’ before she reached this moment.”
In November 2023, she said she would not seek reelection in 2024, after spending three decades in Congress.
‘It’s time for the next generation to step up and take the mantle and be a strong and fierce representative for the people,’ Granger said in a statement.
