Twitter may soon find itself cancelled by Apple and banned from its App Store, according to new Twitter owner Elon Musk.
In tweets Monday, Musk revealed he’d received warnings from Apple threatening to ban his newly acquired social media platform from its store, with no explanation why.
“Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why,” the Tesla CEO reported.
Apple’s supposed threat came after Musk called out the Big Tech firm for stopping most of its advertising on Twitter, asking for Apple CEO Tim Cook to weigh in on the matter.
The tweets spawned a discussion on Apple’s apparent corporate monopoly powers, with Musk questioning who else the company has censored.
He also ran a poll asking if Apple should disclose to consumers all of its censorship actions, and went on to expose a secret 30% tax Apple reportedly adds to everything sold on its App Store.
In another Twitter update, Musk shared a meme showing he preferred to go to war with Apple rather than pay its secret 30% tax, which would greatly impact Twitter’s profitability.
Apple’s threats come as Musk promised to offer amnesty to suspended users and reinstate banned accounts this week.
Analysts say the move to reinstate banned accounts could run afoul of Apple and Google app rules, according to CNBC.
In the event Apple and Google remove the Twitter app from its stores, Musk has floated the notion he would design his own smartphone to bypass corporate censorship efforts.
Back in September 2018, Apple removed Infowars’ phone app from its App Store after initially allowing the app to remain platformed. The removal did not affect users who had already downloaded the app, however it disallowed further updates to the app from the development team.
