Opponents of the new Republican-led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act are “traitors”, Tweeted Elon Musk.

“All Caps: TRAITORS,” the billionaire owner of Twitter added, for emphasis, before asking: “What is the penalty for traitors again?”

Musk was responding to a Tweet thread posted by Speaker Johnson explaining the basics of the SAVE Act, which is intended to help secure federal elections against voter fraud by requiring proof of citizenship in order to register.

As well as requiring state election officials to ask about citizenship status before providing voter-registration forms, the Act requires proof of citizenship to be provided in document form and makes provision for the use of federal databases to track voter rolls and ensure only citizens are registered.

The SAVE Act was introduced in May by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).

“Illegal immigrants and non-citizens across the nation are being improperly registered to vote, allowing them to cast illegitimate ballots in federal elections,” said Sen. Lee, in a press release.

“At a time when trust in voting is more important than ever, we must stop foreign election interference and pass the SAVE Act. Voting is both a sacred right and responsibility of American citizenship, and allowing the people of other nations access to our elections is a grave blow to our security and self-governance. I’m proud to stand with Chip Roy to save our democratic process and representative government.”

Leftist groups have strongly opposed the SAVE Act. Civil rights groups, women’s advocacy groups and disability-rights networks have all spoken out against requiring proof of citizenship status to vote.

In a statement, the League of Women Voters said, “It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and seeks to divide us. It also creates another barrier to voting.

“Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. Instead of moving this legislation forward, Congress should protect voters in this critical election year by strengthening protections against discrimination in voting and expanding access to the ballot.

“Xenophobia Has No Place in Our Elections.”
