Over 250 missile launchers capable of delivering nuclear missiles have been deployed to North Korea’s front-line units on the border with its neighbor South Korea, according to North Korean state media.
The missile launchers provide a “new offensive weapon of our armed forces,” said the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, at a ceremony to mark the deployment. He warned that nuclear capabilities were the best way to counter threats from the US, and that they would have a “particular deterrent effect.”
The launchers appear to be transporter-erector launchers fitted for the Hwasong-11D short-range ballistic missile, which North Korea has claimed are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Each launcher can carry up to four missiles, meaning that 1,000 nuclear missiles could be stationed on the border with South Korea.
Missile tests for the Hwasong-11D platform were conducted in March and May of this year.
North Korea’s leader blamed the “U.S. and its followers’ ever-escalating military confrontation moves” for the production and deployment of the launchers.
Kim stated that Washington remains an “enemy state that our descendants will have to face for generations to come,” regardless of who occupies the White House.
“We will clearly let the U.S. know that if they ignore our repeated warnings and continue to try to cause disaster in the region, they could bring about fatal consequences for themselves.”
Kim added that “this is just the first stage of our plans of building up front-line missile forces.”
