The world’s largest meat supplier JBS was hit with a cyberattack, shutting down internal computer systems which forced the company to suspend parts of its operation in Canada and Australia, the company confirmed Sunday.
The Brazilian meat supply company, which operates in 15 different countries, released a statement from its Colorado branch Sunday explaining that its systems had been targeted in an “organized cybersecurity attack.”
“On Sunday, May 30, JBS USA determined that it was the target of an organized cybersecurity attack, affecting some of the servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems,” said JBS USA spokesperson Nikki Richardson.
“The company took immediate action, suspending all affected systems, notifying authorities and activating the company’s global network of IT professionals and third-party experts to resolve the situation. The company’s backup servers were not affected, and it is actively working with an Incident Response firm to restore its systems as soon as possible.”
JBS USA oversees massive beef and lamb operations in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that includes dozens of meat processing unites, nine logistics centers and eight distribution centers in the three countries.
White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a briefing Tuesday confirming that the hackers did demand a ransom payment from JBS.
“JBS notified the administration that the ransom demand came from a criminal organization likely based in Russia,” she said.
It’s unclear if JBS is negotiating that ransom, as Colonial Pipeline did recently.
The JBS cyberattack comes just weeks after Colonial Pipeline, America’s largest pipeline, was hacked by Russian cyberterrorists, resulting in a nationwide gas shortage that ended after Colonial paid the terrorists a $4.4 million ransom with the encouragement of the Biden administration.
Notably, no such supply chain disruptions occurred during President Trump’s term, but two major attacks on energy and food system happened just months into Biden’s term.
With Trump out of the White House, malicious actors clearly sense a leadership vacuum on the world stage and are taking full advantage of exploiting that weakness.
