A suspect has been identified and his father arrested following a violent armed robbery of an off-duty cop in New York City this weekend, according to reports.
The shocking attack unfolded at around 4 a.m. on Saturday in the Bronx.
A 27-year-old officer was walking to his personal vehicle at the end of a shift when he was ambushed by two masked men demanding his valuables, the New York Post reports.
The victim was on the phone with a colleague who heard him yell, “Don’t shoot me! I’m a cop!”
The thugs proceeded to rob the officer at knifepoint and beat him unconscious.
They made off with his wallet, ID cards, and personal and NYPD-issued phones, sources told the Post.
“They forced him to the ground, struck him in the face, held a knife to his throat, and stole his belongings, including his firearm,” NYPD explained in a statement.
On Sunday afternoon, NYPD identified one suspect as 23-year-old Taveon Hargrove.
Hargrove’s father has since been arrested for using the officer’s stolen credit card at multiple bodegas in the Bronx.
“In just the past month, we’ve seen some heinous attacks on police officers in NYC, including: one with part of his finger bitten off; another with part of his ear bitten off; and this latest vicious assault resulting in severe fractures to an officer’s face, among too many others,” stated NYC Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The officer, who has not been named, regained consciousness in hospital but suffered a broken cheekbone and fractured eye socket.
Hargrove and the other robbery suspect remain on the loose, according to the latest available updates.
