Roger Waters, a co-founder of the legendary British rock band Pink Floyd, released a video Tuesday, speaking out against the current cancel culture assault on his character as the global political establishment attempts to smear him as an anti-semite.
The musician began by addressing the media and politicians who have criticized him for speaking out against the war in Ukraine or for satirically mocking fascist dictators like Adolf Hitler during his rock concerts.
Waters focused on Manchester Labour MP Christian Wakeford, who publicly called for his upcoming concert in the city to be canceled.
“You are trying to get me banned from performing in Manchester?” Waters rhetorically asked. “Me, the bloke that wrote ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘Animals’ and ‘The Wall’ and ‘The Final Cut’. And I’m really proud of it, and it’s a huge body of work. And he wants to cancel my rock and roll show for my brothers and sisters in Manchester, it’s insane!”
Next, the Pink Floyd frontman noted the establishment continues repeating the same accusation that he’s an “anti-semite” in hopes to destroy his reputation, but he said it won’t work because they’re lying.
“You can gather as many fucking morons together as you want to repeat your lie, but it remains a vicious lie,” Waters stated.
The bassist and singer described how people are suddenly upset about themes from his album “The Wall,” which he’s been publicly performing since 1980.
Despite the fact the Nazi-style imagery and attire associated with the album and film “The Wall” are meant to expose and ridicule fascist demagoguery, the political establishment is claiming Waters’ on-stage antics are anti-semitic.
The United States State Department even weighed in on the controversy on Tuesday, saying Waters wearing a Nazi-style uniform at a concert “contained imagery that is deeply offensive to Jewish people and minimized the Holocaust” despite the fact the entire performance is inherently anti-Nazi.
“I can’t believe that they’re trying to do this to me,” Waters said. “I mean, clearly, clearly – where you can hear in my voice – clearly, I’m upset beyond all measure to be called these names. They’re deeply, deeply, deeply insulting, not just to me but to my family, and particularly to my mother and father. My father died at Anzio on the 18th of February, 1944, when I was five months old. He was fighting the Nazis.”
The UK’s Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also called for future Waters shows to be canceled over his “anti-semitic views.”
“The Labour Party stands with the Jewish community and fully condemns Roger Waters. Many people will think of Roger Waters as famous for being a member of one of the most important bands in history, but he is now more synonymous with spreading deeply troubling antisemitism and that is why I believe this show should not be allowed to go ahead,” Keir said this week.
Water doesn’t appear ready to back down to the cancel culture mob anytime soon, stating, “I have spent my entire life speaking out against authoritarianism and oppression wherever I see it.”
Time will tell how this saga plays out, but it’s clear the global establishment is going all-in to try and carry out a character assassination of the world-renowned musician.
