Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed the conviction of former US President Donald Trump in last week’s New York ‘hush money’ trial, adding America’s leaders are ‘burning democracy down to the root’ over what the world sees as an obvious political persecution.
“The [United States’] alleged leadership in democracy, they are burning it down to the root,” said Putin Wednesday to the heads of international news agencies Wednesday during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). “Across the world, it is obvious that this [is a] persecution of Trump … all this is just using the judicial system for this internal political struggle.”

“For us in Russia – and the entire world – people believe this,” continued Putin. “And in the United States, people believe this as well.”
Putin went on to describe how Trump saw a massive increase in support and donations after the guilty verdict.
“It means that people in the United States do not believe the judicial system that is making such decisions,” said Putin. “On the contrary, they believe these decisions have political ground.”
Putin concluded that Russia will work with any president elected by the American people this November.
On the topic of leaders, during the same conversation, Putin provided a forecast on how he believes US leaders will “get rid of” and replace Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
