Former Rep. Ron Paul said he not only approves of Elon Musk’s potential involvement in cutting government waste on behalf of a new Trump administration, but that he would also gladly help the world’s richest man in his endeavor.

The three-time presidential candidate and avowed enemy of big government was talking to Dave Gornoski on his podcast, A Neighbor’s Choice, when he spoke at length about Musk’s new plan to increase government efficiency.

Gornoski asked Paul about Musk’s recent interactions with him on Twitter, and Paul said he would definitely consider advising Musk on reducing waste.

“Everybody would know what I believe and there’d be no secrets, but I wouldn’t want an official position, you know, because I’ve sort of steered away from getting too involved in the politics of it all right now,” Paul said.

He went on to add that he sees his role now as educating the public about the dangers of untrammelled government growth, and that he’s optimistic about how many young people seem receptive to his ideas. He noted that it was never “the Chamber of Commerce people” who attended his talks because they are “the ones that have been lobbying in Congress for more money for the cities.”

Paul also issued a word of caution for Musk. Musk cannot cut too much, too fast without risking devastating consequences, including civil strife.

“You know, a position is easy to have and to hold. But the truth is, you know, what if I did get in this position and all I had to do is sign a piece of paper and the Federal Reserve was eliminated, or you cut the budget by $2 trillion well, what the consequence would be is total chaos and probably civil war and all that.”

Paul said government overspending was a deliberate policy by “cultural Marxists” whose aim is “the more chaos, the better.”
