Samsung has become the latest company to distance itself from the letter ‘Z’ by rebranding its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 phones.
The letter ‘Z’ was cancelled after it was linked with support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier this week, the German Embassy tweeted that security forces are “keeping an eye on the use of the symbol” and that “anyone publicly approving the war may be liable to prosecution in Germany.”

The Ukrainian government also recently called for the global “criminalization” of the letter in the context of it being used to support Russia’s actions.
After Zurich Insurance Group dropped the letter ‘Z’ from their branding, technology giant Samsung is following suit.
The company’s foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, are being renamed in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
They are now being listed on Samsung’s website as Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3, a change that may be implemented in other countries.
Lithuania recently announced plans to punish individuals and businesses that display the letter ‘Z’ with 500 euro fines.
“The Korean brand is probably dropping the letter Z in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, considering the markets where the name change is in effect,” Android Headlines reported.
Whether Vladimir Putin will now consider removing all Russian forces from Ukraine in response to Samsung removing a letter from their website remains to be seen.
