Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not yet accepted the election outcome announced by the mainstream media and says President Trump’s allegations of voter fraud must be investigated.
Refusing to acknowledge the media’s declaration of a Joe Biden win, McConnell, who won re-election in his home state of Kentucky last week, made the comments Monday in remarks on the Senate floor discussing the 2020 elections.
“Obviously no states have yet certified their election results,” McConnell stated. “We have one or two states that are already on track for a re-count, and I believe the president may have legal challenges underway in at least five states.”
“The core principle here is not complicated. In the United States of America all legal ballots must be counted. Any illegal ballots must not be counted. The process should be transparent, or observable by all sides and the courts are here to work through concerns.”
“Our institutions are actually built for this. We have the system in place to consider concerns, and President Trump is 100 percent within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options,” McConnell pointed out.
McConnell then pointed to the 2000 Bush-Gore race, which was called prematurely for Gore, where the election result hinged on a recount in the state of Florida.
“Let’s go back 20 years ago. 20 years ago when Florida came down to a very thin margin, we saw Vice President Gore exhaust the legal system and wait to concede until December.”
The president, meanwhile, on Monday indicated he had no intention to concede and instead shot of a flurry of tweets discussing positive developments in several contested states.
