Update, May 5: The Daily Mail identified the Nicaraguan migrant who drowned as Calixto Rojas, a former radio host in Nicaragua who frequently wrote letters to the station detailing how he left his country after attending a protest critical of the Nicaraguan government, after which he received death threats and threats against the lives of his family members.
“They threatened me with death, that if I continued like this they would disappear me and my family,” he wrote in one recent letter.
“I had to make the hard decision to leave my family to save their lives, because when a Sandinista march was passing by made up of workers from the mayor’s office, they pounced on my house throwing stones towards the roof, it was at that moment that in a consensus (decision) with my wife, I have to leave my house and therefore the country.”

Shocking footage out of South Texas shows the moment an illegal alien from Nicaragua drowned in the middle of the Rio Grande River while attempting an unlawful entry.
Video published by Fox News’ Bryan Llenas Monday shows a man struggling to escape what appears to be a small whirlpool after attempting to swim across an area of the Rio Grande underneath an international bridge in Eagle Pass.

The man’s friend, meanwhile, can be seen clutching a bridge support pillar amidst a strong current as people on the Mexican side of the river look on in horror.
The current was reportedly strong due to a nearby dam opening up to release water.
According to Llenas, the Texas National Guard was on scene, but they’re reportedly under orders not to perform water rescues after the recent death of Specialist Bishop E. Evans, 22, from Arlington, Texas, who drowned after jumping into the river to rescue two illegal aliens.
This happened in front of Mexican Authorities, the National Guard and dozens of witnesses. No one went into the water to try to save the man. A guy on the Mexican side finally jumped in but it was too late.

“This happened in front of Mexican Authorities, the National Guard and dozens of witnesses,” Llenas reported. “No one went into the water to try to save the man. A guy on the Mexican side finally jumped in but it was too late.”
“The drowning took place about 50 yards away from two US national guardsmen and three of their rescue kayak boats. The National Guard Humvee that was on site by the river also had visible orange rescue floatation devices. A National Guardsman told me they were ordered not to perform any more water rescues in the Rio Grande River following the tragic death” of Evans, reported Llenas.

The body was recovered by Mexican authorities on the Mexican side of the river.
Llenas said he was unable to confirm whether the Texas military, or the Texas governor’s office gave the order.
The drowning comes as a US District Court judge last week blocked the Biden administration from lifting Title 42, the Trump-era Covid rule on immigration that allowed for speedy deportations, pending a hearing on May 13.
Border Patrol officials and even Democrat lawmakers have warned ending Title 42 would lead to an influx of illegal aliens that threatens to overwhelm Border Patrol and DHS resources.
