A man previously known to authorities was arrested for allegedly stabbing a teenager to death and knifing another victim hours later in Los Angeles last week, according to reports.
The shocking incident unfolded at around 3:55 p.m. on Friday in the El Sereno neighborhood of the City of Angels.
Xavier Daniel Chavarin, 17, was waiting for his mother to pick him on a sidewalk not far from Woodrow Wilson High School when he was stabbed in the back multiple times, KNBC reports.
Chavarin stumbled into a nearby Mexican restaurant seeking help before collapsing on the floor, witnesses say.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released surveillance footage showing the suspect walking through a parking lot after exiting a vehicle, pulling out a large blade, and appearing to raise it in preparation to strike.
Hours later, a suspect matching the same description repeatedly stabbed a 33-year-old man who survived, police say.
On Wednesday morning, LAPD detectives went to the home of 32-year-old David Zapata in Alhambra, where a standoff ensued.
Zapata reportedly barricaded himself inside the residence for hours as additional officers and armored vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
Zapata eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
His bail was reportedly set at $2 million.
“Zapata had a history of mental health problems and that Alhambra police said he’d ‘been a problem in this neighborhood,’” the LA Times reports, citing LAPD Cmdr. German Hurtado.
An investigation is ongoing.
