A Syrian man is accused of dousing his wife in flammable liquid and setting her on fire in the city of Goslar. The 40-year-old was found critically wounded after falling out of her window in what appears to be a femicide on the eastern side of the side.
Investigators say the woman was sleeping peacefully in her bed when Mohamad R. doused her in flammable liquid. The woman woke up on fire, and in a panic, began running. Investigators believe he then pushed her flaming body out of the window.
The woman was found Monday lying outside, under the 2nd-floor window of her apartment building with severe burns across her body. She was critically injured and rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries there.
The family’s 5-year-old son and 21-year-old daughter are being cared for now by the German youth welfare office.
The 50-year-old Syrian man has been arrested and charged with murder, according to the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office.
The couple was married for 21 years, had lived in the Harz Mountains in Lower Saxony since 2021 and moved to Am Müllerkamp Straße in the Oker district just a month and a half ago.
Police are exploring jealousy as a potential reason behind the crime. Mohamad R. was known to keep his wife from the public.
“In the entire time, I only saw her three times,” a landlady told Bild newspaper. The man was said to be delusional about his wife having a potential affair; however, police are still investigating a motive.
“We assume it was a crime of passion, but we don’t yet know the exact motive,” a source told Bild.
