The Trump administration fired 20 immigration judges on Friday.

Thirteen judges who had yet to be sworn in and five assistant chief immigration judges were given marching orders, joining two who were dismissed the week before.

It is unclear whether the fired judges will be replaced. Immigration courts are backlogged with nearly 4 million cases. Asylum cases, in particular, can take years to decide.

The Trump administration has also replaced five top court officials and issued a raft of measures designed to overturn Biden-era policies.

Last month, the Justice Department halted financial funding to NGOs providing information and guidance to migrants facing deportation. That funding was restored after a legal challenge.

The firings at the Justice Department come as part of wider cuts to the federal workforce. On Thursday, the Trump administration ordered all probationary employees to be laid off, a move that could affect hundreds of thousands of workers.

As many as 15,000 Internal Revenue Service employees are now targeted for termination.
