Mass riots broke out in Philadelphia on 26 October after police officers fatally shot Walter Wallace Jr, a black man said to have been armed with a knife. The man was approaching the officers despite being ordered to stop and drop the weapon.

Some 30 police officers were injured in the riots and numerous businesses damaged and looted. The rioting continued on 28 October, with authorities imposing a curfew to curb the riots.

Several hundred members of the Pennsylvania National Guard have been deployed to Philadelphia to help local police quell civil unrest.
