During a Sunday press conference, UFC President Dana White reacted to new CDC guidelines “allowing” vaccinated individuals to take off their face masks in most social settings.
“During fight week, the CDC came out with their new rules that you don’t have to wear a mask if you’re vaccinated, did you notice any difference this week compared to the week in Florida?” a reporter asked White.
“Um no, I don’t think so you know in Florida I saw people wearing masks and not wearing masks,” White answered. “I saw some people with masks and people not wearing a mask here, which you guys know how I feel about that, it’s the way it should be.”
He continued, “If you don’t want to wear a mask, you should be able to walk around and go do what you want to do without big-mouth people shooting their mouth off. And if you want to wear a mask, wear a mask and people shouldn’t be shooting their mouth off at you either.”
“Hopefully we can get to a normal place where people who are comfortable with masks can wear them and people who aren’t don’t have to wear them,” White added.
Next, the reporter asked Dana, “Do you feel any vindication of, you know, what you went through to get back to work with the UFC and now they’re changing stance and leading the way to getting back to normalcy?”
White responded, “I knew when I was doing it, it was the right thing to do and now I know it was the right thing to do so I’ve never questioned it from the beginning. So, I guess you’re asking me does it feel great to be right? Yeah, it feels great to be right.”
The reporter then asked White if any states have reached out to the UFC in an attempt to bring the show to their area and provide jobs to a COVID-crippled economy.
While he couldn’t name any states off the top of his head, the UFC president confirmed states other than Texas and Florida have reached out.
“We’ll see how this thing plays out, who’s going to open up, and you know the problem is that I won’t go anywhere that’s not 100 percent,” White noted. “I’ll only go to places that are 100 percent open.”
