The UK’s ‘vaccine passport’ could be set to fail if it goes up for a vote in Parliament after reports that opposition party Labour would not support the policy.
Yesterday, the government indicated that vaccine passports will “likely become a feature of our lives” and that people would have to prove they’ve had the vaccination or a negative COVID test in order to attend events and access basic services.
Although Prime Minister Boris Johnson asserted that pubs and restaurants would not require the passports, Minister for Covid Vaccine Deployment Nadhim Zahawi later suggested that this might be the case in future.
However, the entire policy could be in trouble after it was revealed that Labour may join Tory rebels and the Liberal Democrats in voting against the measure.
“On the basis of what we’ve seen and discussed with ministers, we oppose the government’s plans for domestic vaccine passports,” a Labour source told Politico’s playbook. “They appear poorly thought through, will put added burdens on business and run the risk of becoming another expensive Whitehall project that gets outsourced to friends of Tory ministers.”
If Labour vote against the measure along with Tory rebels, the Conservative government wouldn’t have enough votes to get the measure through Parliament. The possibility remains that they could attempt to ram the policy through without a vote at all, claiming it’s already allowed under existing coronavirus lockdown laws.
Labour’s opposition to the policy would be massive given that the party has been nothing but a rubber stamp for the government’s every lockdown mandate for over a year.
As we have previously highlighted, the vaccine passport is basically a digital ID card which the government plans to link to facial recognition technology.
This means that it goes far beyond the remit of just a vaccine passport and could represent the first incarnation of something similar to China’s onerous social credit score system.
