Reporters at a press conference regarding the shooting of Daunte Wright scolded a Minnesota police chief for using the word “riot” to describe the chaos that erupted in the city last night.
On Monday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon held a presser to give further details on the police response to the unruly protests that followed the shooting of Wright, who appears to have been accidentally gunned down by a female officer who mistook her service pistol for her taser.
“Just so everybody is clear, I was front and center at the protest, at the riot,” Gannon stated, before immediately being cut off by a reporter.
“There was no riot,” a reporter tells him, as others join in taking objection to the term.
“Ok,” Gannon says, going on to explain police on the scene were attacked wore riot gear.
“There was… the officers that were putting themselves in harm’s way were being pelted with frozen cans of pop, they were being pelted with concrete blocks,” described the police chief.
“Yes, we had our helmets on. We had other protection gear. But an officer was injured, hit in the head with a brick … he was transported to the hospital. So, we had to make decisions, we had to disperse the crowd because we can’t allow our officers to be harmed.”
The press conference follows rioting in Minneapolis overnight sparked by protests over the death of Daunte Wright, who was shot dead by police on Sunday.
“Officers say that as they tried to arrest him, Wright got back in his car and drove off,” reports the Daily Mail. “An officer fired at the vehicle, striking Wright, but he continued driving for several blocks before hitting another car.”
“Police have not said if Wright was armed or explained yet why they opened fire.”
Wright , who was wanted on a warrant, was allegedly stopped for having an air-freshener hanging from his rear-view mirror, which is illegal in Minnesota, although that has been disputed online.
