White House press secretary Jen Psaki was caught off guard after a reporter asked her about shocking recently released photos of thousands of migrants huddled in detainment facilities.
“Now that the public has seen that, is that not a crisis, and what conditions or situations, what metrics would have to be in place for the administration to call it that?” a reporter asked.
“Children presenting at our border, who are fleeing violence, who are fleeing prosecution, who are fleeing terrible situations is not a crisis,” Psaki explained. “We feel that it is our responsibility to humanely approach this circumstance.”
“What these photos show is what we have long been saying, which is that these border patrol facilities are not places made for children,” Psaki continued. “They are not places that we want children to be staying for an extended period of time.”
“The alternative is to send children back on this treacherous journey. That is not, in our view, the right choice to make,” she added.
Photos of the border detention facilities were released Monday by Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), with more photos and video leaked from Project Veritas.
This comes after Biden’s DHS announced over the weekend that the U.S. would award an $86 million contract for hotel rooms to hold thousands of illegal migrants.
Media access is still blocked from covering Biden’s border operations, and border patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are under a gag order not to speak with the press.
