Washington State Governor Jay Inslee has put the National Guard on standby in his state, in preparation for violence related to the 2024 election.
“Based upon general and specific information and concerns regarding the potential for violence or other unlawful activity related to the 2024 general election, I want to ensure we are fully prepared to respond,” Inslee wrote in a letter published on his website on Friday.
Two ballot boxes were set on fire in the Pacific Northwest this week, damaging or destroying hundreds of ballots. An incendiary device is believed to have been used.
One of the boxes was in Vancouver, Washington, where almost all of the ballots were destroyed. The second was in Portland, Oregon. Most ballots there survived the fire.
The fires came after a US Department of Homeland Security bulletin from September obtained by the watchdog group Property of the People warned: “Some social media users are discussing and encouraging various methods of sabotaging ballot drop boxes and avoiding detection, likely heightening the potential for targeting of this election infrastructure through the 2024 election cycle.”
Devices found at the scenes were marked with the words “Free Gaza,” as was a similar device involved in another attack earlier last month.
Almost all voting in Washington and Oregon is doing by mail or ballot dropoff, rather than in person. In Oregon’s Multnomah County, for example, less than 1% of voting is done in person.
