Security footage out of Southern California shows the moment a man with an AR-15 entered a liquor store and was immediately shot by the shop’s owner.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, four armed suspects arrived in a vehicle outside the business after midnight and exited the car armed with long rifles and wearing facial coverings and hoods.

The store’s owner, 80-year-old Craig Cope, saw the vehicle approaching and grabbed his shotgun upon seeing the armed men approach his shop’s door.

As soon as the first robber entered the building, Cope fired one shot and struck the man in the arm, leaving the 23-year-old man screaming, “He shot my arm off,” as he ran away.

The three other men involved, aged 22-27, were arrested and charged with robbery and conspiracy, being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The man who was shot remains hospitalized in critical, yet stable condition.

The BMW SUV used by the suspects was found to be stolen and there were several stolen firearms in the vehicle as well.

After shooting the man, Cope suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital where he recovered.

One of Cope’s employees said, “He was on his toes, thank God. He just prepared himself. He’s always prepared as far as weapons go.”

Another employee explained that Cope helps homeless people in the area, and told ABC7, “He’s just very kind and never turns anyone away. He treated everyone equally.”

Cope has owned the liquor store since 1967 and will likely not be charged with any crime in relation to the incident.
