Two robbers had broken into his home and had ordered his friend to the floor in the living room while they ransacked the house.
WXYZ reports:
The two suspects got into the house through the kitchen window, which is boarded up now. From there, they made their way to the living room, holding Ben’s friend at gunpoint. They then searched the house for valuables like studio equipment and jewelry before ending up at Ben’s bedroom door.
Nevers says as he made his way out of his room, he was confronted by a man with a gun.
“He seen that I had the gun like this, and he shot me. Shot me in the foot first, and as soon as he shot, I shot back. So, I shot twice, and I know I hit him in the leg,” Nevers described.
Nevers says his shot to the foot required immediate surgery.
“My foot completely shattered,” he told Fox2Detroit. “They have screws and plates, immediate surgery, and then I got hit in the back right here as well.”
His girlfriend, who was asleep during the altercation, was also shot and hospitalized.
“I know she got shot in the back, and it like traveled up and it like hit her kidney and I think it’s lodged in her chest right now – like they can’t get the bullet out cause it’s too dangerous. So, I know they are watching her and it’s going to be a couple more days,” Nevers said.
Nevers suggested his firearm gave him the confidence not to back down in the face of danger.
“Obviously in my room, I’m not laying down. I’m not,” he said.
The suspected robber, Philip Price, was later arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and some 20 other charges.
The incident is just one example of how the Second Amendment helps everyday people protect and defend their lives and their property.
