CNN analysts can’t figure out why Americans observing the devastating wildfires in California aren’t blaming manmade “climate change.”
In a report over the weekend, CNN reviewed “monthly change” polls showing searches for “climate change” down 9% on Google in the wake of the fires, while searches for the term “wildfire” shot up 2,400%.
“This is the most amount of people searching for ‘wildfires’ ever ever, going back since Google trends began back in 2004,” remarked CNN poll guru Harry Enten. “But look at ‘climate change,’ look at the change – it doesn’t go hand in hand with ‘wildfires.’ It’s actually down, it’s down 9%, and I also looked in California – there has been no increase in the number of searches for ‘climate change.'”
Enten continued: “So the bottom line is this: Americans are definitely interested in learning about these wildfires. They’re interested in following the news about the wildfires, but they are not making that connection with climate change. That’s the bottom line here.”
CNN’s poll analyst went on to note that despite numerous recent major weather events, Americans’ “worry” about climate change is only about four points higher than in 1991, according to a Gallup survey.
“We have seen a lot of extreme weather events over the last few decades, right? Hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires… you might expect that Americans worry about climate change,” Enten said.
“So, despite all these extreme weather events, Americans are really no more worried about climate change than they were, what is that now, nearly thirty-five years ago. I mean there’s just no real trend line here.”
Enten next pointed out a Pew Research Center poll showing fewer Americans believe humans contribute to “climate change” than in previous years.
“Even as the extreme weather goes up, humans are not exactly as worried about climate change as they necessarily once were,” the poll guru admitted.
CNN’s climate change analysis comes as FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell told CNN over the weekend the wildfires in Southern California are caused by climate change.
“We’re seeing the change coming from climate change, and we’re seeing more significant severe weather events. That’s what we’re seeing here in California,” Criswell told Jake Tapper Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Perhaps people aren’t buying the climate change excuse because evidence suggests the fires spread rapidly due to a confluence of dangerous bureaucratic policies, incompetence, mismanagement, 100mph winds and arson.
