A Democrat congressman from New York couldn’t believe his ears when Trump Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted he wasn’t exactly sure who was running the White House in 2024.
The incident unfolded during a House Financial Services Committee hearing Wednesday, where Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) grilled Bessent over the Trump administration’s efforts to fix America’s trade deficits.
Meeks argued that since prior administrations hadn’t addressed trade deficits, the Trump admin was essentially chasing a problem that didn’t need solving.
“Four decades, we had trade deficits in the United States of America. And nobody said it was an emergency. Democratic and Republican presidents. You know what that says to me? That is not an emergency because it hasn’t been for four decades,” Meeks told Bessent, going on to accuse the admin of overreach, criticizing the Trump admin for supposedly circumventing Congress with its economic policies.
“Let me ask this question,” Meeks continued, “Who has been the president since January 20th, 2025?”
“Donald J. Trump,” Bessent responded.
“And who was the president in 2024?” Rep. Meeks asked.
“One believes President Biden,” Bessent said with a smirk, eliciting laughter from the chamber.
“‘One believes?'” Meeks asked incredulously. “Are you one of those non-believers that the election, that the American people didn’t vote?”
“I am not,” Bessent answered.
While Rep. Meeks appears to have interpreted Bessent’s response to mean he believed the 2020 election was stolen, Bessent might have meant he really didn’t know who ran the White House during Joe Biden’s tenure — considering the Heritage Foundation’s probe into his autopen signatures on documents, after which they asserted that “WHOEVER CONTROLLED THE AUTOPEN CONTROLLED THE PRESIDENCY.”
The 46th president certainly didn’t alleviate concerns over his mental decline when he botched his first debate with Donald Trump on June 27, prompting him to drop out of the presidential race on July 21 — 8 days after the first failed attempt on then-presidential candidate Trump’s life.
