A woman named Crystal Mangum recently revealed she lied by saying three Duke University lacrosse players raped her at a team party in 2006, resulting in a nationwide news story that stoked racial and sexual division in the U.S.
More than 18 years after the Duke lacrosse allegations, Crystal Mangum admits that she made it all up.

"I testified falsely against [the lacrosse players] by saying that they raped me when they didn't…I made up a story that wasn't true…I hope that they can forgive me." pic.twitter.com/3yMjbQTQXH
Mangum, now 46-years-old and serving a prison sentence for murdering her boyfriend in 2013, spoke to Let’s Talk With Kat from the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.
Discussing the disturbing rape allegations she made against the young men 18 years ago, Mangum said, “They trusted me that I wouldn’t betray their trust, and I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong. I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me and made up a story that wasn’t true because I wanted validation from people and not from God. That was wrong and I hope that they can forgive me.”
The Duke lacrosse players she accused – David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann – were said to have engaged in the “racially motivated” gang-raping of Mangum, who was hired as a stripper at one of the team’s parties.
After the district attorney prosecuting the case was caught withholding exculpatory evidence he was disbarred, and then-North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper declared the trio innocent thanks to DNA evidence exonerating the boys.
Duke settled a lawsuit with the lacrosse players after its former President Richard Brodhead suspended the students and canceled the team’s entire season.
The young men were attacked with the full force of the mainstream news and sports media landscape.
