The White House on Thursday participated in the latest meme craze taking X by storm, sharing an image of a sobbing illegal alien fentanyl dealer’s arrest animated in the iconic style of Japanese animated film studio Studio Ghibli.
The image was intended to represent ICE Philadelphia’s arrest earlier this month of Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, a 36-year-old illegal alien from the Dominican Republic who reentered the country after being previously deported for distributing fentanyl.
The White House’s meme followed a barrage of images hitting X this week showing historical events and famous internet memes receiving the Ghibli makeover, as many discovered OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o engine has the capability to flawlessly recreate the Japanese animation studio’s art style.

For what it’s worth, Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, the creative mind behind Studio Ghibli and its cult classic films including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, views AI as abhorrent and has been averse to integrating it into his productions, and one point telling a group of AI researchers,Ā “I feel like we are nearing the end of timesā¦I am utterly disgusted…If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it, but I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all…I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
