Following the airing of two advertisements during the Super Bowl paid for by a Christian organisation, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez complained that Jesus wouldn’t approve of the ‘fascist’ content.
The group called He Gets Us was reported to have spent $20 million on the two slots. The ads depicted Jesus as disapproving of the division politics and mainstream culture is causing in the U.S. and around the globe.
The ads with the tag line “Jesus loved the people we hate,” were targeted at communities who may feel shunned by Christianity, such as LGBTQ+ people and refugees.
The message failed to resonate with AOC, however, who declared that the ads “make fascism look benign.”
The reason AOC reacted this way is likely that the ads were funded by Hobby Lobby CEO David Green and run by the Servant Foundation who have previously funded anti-abortion campaigns.
He Gets Us responded to AOC, with spokesman Jason Vanderground noting “[Jesus] cares about our problems because he has experienced them. He gets us. We believe that investing in efforts to ensure more people consider his life and movement as inspiration for their own, will in turn, help improve the lives of those listening — and begin to create the kind of cascade of love Jesus himself sought to generate.”
Social media reacted to AOC accordingly:
