A commune in France was rocked by the news that a group of armed ‘young people’ showed up outside a primary school and threatened to “kill everyone,” according to reports.
The shocking incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. on Monday in Valence, a town in the department of Drôme.
One male was stabbed when rival gangs of ‘youths’ brandishing knives and machetes brawled near the entrance to the Brossolette school in the Plan district.
Combatants then began hurling insults and threats at parents escorting their children.
“I was with my daughter, coming back from lunch, and I saw young people beating each other up, screaming,” one tearful mother told local media.
“Then a car arrived with weapons sticking out of the window. And they shouted: ‘Children, or no children, we’re going to kill you all tonight.’ Several people from the school came to help us get inside and gathered the children in shelter.”
Another mother said she heard one suspect say, “We are going to come back to kill you all. You are hindering our business.”
By the time police arrived, the suspects had already fled the scene.
“It scares me to bring my children to school tomorrow,” a father said.
“I don’t want something to happen and regret it all my life, so as long as this goes on, my children won’t go to school anymore.”
Teachers are pushing for the facility to be temporarily closed until heavier security measures are put in place, and a strike is being organized.
“We decided to stop [working] so that the authorities would take this state of terror into account,” one teacher explained.
“We regret it, but it’s become too dangerous for everyone.”
Local residents say the region has become a battle zone amid ongoing “guerilla warfare” between rival factions and drug traffickers.
“It seems to have become normal. But no one should have to live in such fear. We’ve felt abandoned for 20 years, but this is more than abandonment,” one resident said.
“There is a war going on.”
