DC police last week made an unsettling discovery at the home of a pro-life advocate who turned over the bodies of five babies reportedly born alive at a Washington DC abortion clinic, prompting calls for a medical investigation into whether the abortionist behind the children’s deaths violated federal laws.
DC Metro police last Wednesday were summoned by anti-abortion activist and director of activism for the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) Lauren Handy to her home, where she handed over five partially-birthed aborted babies’ bodies.
“People will freak out when they hear,” Handy told reporters at the scene.
Handy, who was arrested on March 30 on separate charges, said she received the dead babies from a whistleblower connected to the Washington Surgi-Clinic, an abortion center.
“Prior to the arrest, one of the defendants privately arranged for the Metropolitan Washington D.C. Police homicide unit to pick up five recently discovered late-term aborted babies for forensic examination,” PAAU wrote in a statement on their website.
According to PAAU, the babies’ “late gestational ages, as well as their apparent sustained injuries potentially, show violations of the Partial-Birth Abortion Act as well as the Born Alive Infants Protection Act which are federal crimes.”
Despite the possible federal violations, DC police have made no arrests, or filed any charges in connection with the discovery, with executive assistant DC Police Chief Ashan Benedict last Thursday claiming the babies were aborted “in accordance with DC law.”
The discovery has led to calls from pro-life advocates urging the DC medical examiner to conduct an investigation into whether the children could have survived the partial-births, and into whether any laws were violated.
On Tuesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) added her voice to the growing chorus of outrage, saying, “The slaughter of innocent children is of course the logical endpoint to the left’s culture of death, in which women are warmly encouraged to kill the babies they ought to be nurturing and then brag about it afterwards.”
“Since baby-killing activists are now brazen enough to advocate for infanticide, it is right to ask whether these infants were victim of this new and bloodthirsty zeal for the deaths of innocents,” she said.
“What we need now is a full forensic examination to determine precisely how, why and when these blameless babies died, then the police must open a murder investigation if the bodies are found to have air, or preservative solution in the lungs. We need to hold the doctors concerned accountable.”
Similarly, national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser has issued calls for an investigation, saying:
“These horrific images of aborted children – human beings like us, subjected to lethal violence and possibly born alive at an age when their pain would have been excruciating – expose the brutality of every one of the thousands of abortions that take place daily in America. Despite legislatures across the country acting on the will of the people to advance more protections for unborn children and mothers in recent years than ever before, atrocities like these continue because of radical U.S. policy that allows abortion on demand up to the moment of birth. How many times must we be confronted with the truth? As the great abolitionist William Wilberforce said about the slave trade, ‘You may choose to look the other way but you can never again say you did not know.’
“We call on the D.C. medical examiner to do an autopsy of these children’s bodies and for federal authorities to perform a thorough, unsparing investigation and prosecute violations of the law. Ending abortion is the human rights battle of our time and we hope that a just Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs case soon allows all states to take action.”
According to LifeNews, the clinic in question has a history of performing abortions late into the second trimester, when a fetus is generally considered to be viable.
The Washington Surgi-Clinic “advertises abortions up to 27 weeks of pregnancy, and turned them over to police. The facility’s late-term abortionist Cesare Santangelo has been caught on video stating that he would not intervene to save a baby who survived an abortion. Washington, D.C. has no gestational limits on abortion,” reports LifeNews.
A medical expert specializing in infants consulted by Live Action News said the babies could indeed have lived had they been properly cared for.
“I can say with confidence that these babies died at an age when they were viable, premature people,” said Neonatologist Dr. Robin Pierucci.

Commenting on “Baby boy 1,” Dr. Kathi Aultman, a former abortionist, described to LifeNews that the infant appeared “completely normal” and could very well have been born alive.

“Baby Boy #1 appears to be in the 3rd trimester near term and looks like he should have been in the nursery. He is totally intact, but his skin is somewhat macerated. He appears to be completely normal and was probably aborted using the induction method, which uses medication to induce labor. He looks about the same size as my granddaughter when she was born.”
Likewise, “Baby Girl #1” also could have been a viable birth were it not for an incision made in the back of its neck.
Baby girl 1 appears to be in the early 3rd trimester and has indications she may have been alive at the start of the procedure.

“Baby Girl #1 appears to be in the late 2nd or early 3rd trimester. She appears intact and completely normal except for trauma to the neck. There appears to be an incision at the base of the skull, and the head has been decompressed. If the baby was alive at the start of this procedure, it would be considered a Partial-Birth Abortion and would be illegal. She is larger than most of the babies I cared for in the NICU, and if the abortion hadn’t killed her, she would have had a decent chance of survival at this gestational age and size.”

“All media inquiries on this matter are being handled by the Mayor’s communication team,” a representative from the DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told Infowars Tuesday.
UPDATE: On Tuesday, the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising held a press conference regarding the dead babies.
According to PAAU, questions answered during the presser include:
- Where did the aborted babies come from?
- Did the Metropolitan Police Department test for oxygen in the lungs of these babies?
- Why did those arrested by the FBI choose Washington Surgi-Clinic for their protest?
- How were the fetal remains acquired?
- Who obtained the fetal remains?
- How many aborted fetuses were acquired in total, besides the five in police custody?
- What will happen to the remaining aborted fetuses (that have not been turned over to police)?
- Where are the fetuses now?
- What would have happened to these fetal remains had they not been recovered?
- What demands are the defendants, and those who obtained the aborted babies making of the Department of Justice?
- Who is Dr. Cesare Santangelo, and what is his role in the deaths of these children?
